Skin conditions with ingrown hairs

An ingrown hair causes inflammation of the skin. This creates a small pimple where the hair is stuck.

Folliculites barbea

Ingrown hairs in the beard area that are associated with irritation and inflammation is called follliculitis barbea. Ingrown hairs in the beard area are more common in people with frizzy hair. People who shave their hair very short are also more likely to suffer from ingrown hairs in the beard area.

Acne Inversa / Hidradenitis Supperativa

Acne inversa also called hidradenitis supperativa is a severe form of acne that mainly occurs in the groin, armpits and buttock fold. This is a chronic inflammatory reaction of the hair follicles. This inflammatory response blocks the opening of the hair follicle. As a result, the sebum can no longer leave the skin, causing a major blockage. These inflammations are accompanied by a lot of pain and pus.

Sinus pilonidalis

A pilonidal sinus is a cyst in the buttock fold. This cyst occurs because the hairs grow into the buttock fold. The ingrown hairs cause an abscess and/or inflammation.

Cause ingrown hair

Ingrown hairs are more common in people whose hair is curly. Because the hair curls, the hair grows back into the skin. This gives an inflammatory response. It is also possible that the hairs are shaved too short, so that the hair grows back into the skin later. Also, ingrown hairs occur in various skin conditions as mentioned above: Folliculites barbea, Acne inversa and Sinus pilonidalis
